Hitting the Trails
When it comes to a hot summer day, staying cool becomes an important part of choosing an activity. In Fairfield County, the Metro Parks system gives visitors the opportunity to both stay cool and get a little exercise with a canoe trip through Battelle Darby Creek. With 6,880 acres of outdoors to explore, the park is full of opportunities to learn about nature while enjoying a day in the shade.
Battelle Darby Creek spans a huge area and offers a variety of activities for families, nature enthusiasts and pet lovers with a 1.6 mile pet trail. The trail system throughout the property is well-maintained, and definitely isn't limited to avid hikers. With varying degrees of difficulty, it's easy to find a trail that's right for any level of expertise, whether one is looking for a challenge on the Indian Ridge trail or a lighter walk on the Hawthorn path. The scenery is beautiful and the hike, run, or walk will definitely be worth it for the views of Ohio’s landscape.
Hitting the trails, however, isn't the only thing to do. With access to Osprey Lake, Big Darby Creek and Little Darby Creek, getting cooled off is easy as "natural play areas" are a highlight of the park experience. Adults and children alike are encouraged to travel off the trails in these areas to enjoy a quick and refreshing splash in the creek and just enjoy the environment surrounding them.
The park is open for visitors at 6:30 a.m., giving early risers plenty of time to hike the trails or find a great fishing spot. For those looking for an evening canoe trip when it's cooler, the park stays open until 10:00 p.m. from April through September. Check the Metro Parks website for a current list of events and activities going on throughout the summer.
